Stamps, Speedy Treadmill Hill Drills, & Project Life

Saturday when I was getting ready to meal prep, I went to get the onions to chop up for the meat sauce.  I moved the acorn squash and was shocked to see that one of my onions had sprouted!  I am keeping it!  My friend Amanda gave me some potting soil and I bought it a nice pot for it to move into.

So, I use dailymile.com to track my runs (on top of tracking manually in a little pocket calendar).  About a week into the new year, it emails me my stats for the previous year.  It’s always fascinating to see how many donuts I’ve burned off and how far around the world I made it.

Since I switched shifts with that girl and worked on Sunday for her, she worked on Tuesday for me.  At first, I was just going to sleep in, go to the gym and for a run and then chill until it was time for me to go to work for the overtime I signed up for on the night shift.  But then, when Amanda and I were hanging out on Saturday, she told me that Flix Brewhouse was playing Labyrinth in a tribute to David Bowie and you got a commemorative glass with your ticket.  I was expecting a regular pint glass, but they handed out brandy snifters instead!  How cool is that?  Also, I purchased the LAST ticket to the show!

And, of course, I have scrapbooked yet another page in my album already and we’re only halfway through the week.  Haha!  I put the onion in there.  The orange I vandalized last week made its way onto the page too.  And then, of course, I scrapped about the Labyrinth event!  I did have to redo the Goblin King 4x6 card as the stamp I used for the quote was messier than I was expecting it to be.  So I just washi-ed the entire card and will use it with another spread.  I’m really digging how I can use washi tapes on the cards to make custom backgrounds!  I really can’t wait to explore new ways of doing my cards.  I’ll be watching lots of process videos and being a creeper on the scrapbook Facebook group pages.

Anyway, Tuesday…since I was off from my regular afternoon/evening shift, I could “sleep in” and had set my alarm for 2:30pm.  However, I woke up around 1:15.  Ugh.  I can’t win.  Anyway, I suck at time management when it comes to running errands, so it was probably a good thing I did get up early (except for how tired I was when I was working my overtime shift that night) or I wouldn’t have had time to do ANY part of the workout I had planned on doing.  As it was, all I got done was a semi-speedy 3 miles on the treadmill, then all the strength training I did was the 3-way ab crunch machine and the back extension machine.  Oh well.  I wish I’d had time to do some of my PT exercises, but I just didn’t.  As it was I got to the theater for Labyrinth about 10 or so minutes later than I’d planned.

By the way, I meant to post this Tuesday and then have a whole ‘nother post for today.  Oh well.  It’s all good.

I had another physical therapy appointment at RunLab Thursday morning.  He had me doing speedy hill drills for about 1 minute on the treadmill 8% incline then about 30 seconds of different strength exercises to fatigue my quads so that my hamstrings would fire up and take over my running stride.  By the end of the drills, I was clocking about a 7:45 min/mi pace and it was pretty much EFFORTLESS!  Wow, who woulda thunk that good form made you go faster?  The pros, that’s who.  HA!  Anyway, afterward, I went to the hike & bike trail and logged 4 easy miles.  I was hoping to run them fast-ish, but my legs were all sorts of tired from PT.

After the run, I drove over to the nearest Michael’s to see if they had this unicorn stamp set I’ve been looking for.  And they did!  Plus they had some Valentine’s themed washi tape that I really want and will go back for this weekend.  It’s a tube of 8 rolls, but I mainly want the one with cameras, though I like all of them.  Just like the camera one the most.

When I got home and after I’d showered (of course), I worked on my Project Life some more and got 2 more pages done.  Though, I may go back and add some embellishments to one of the pages as it has pretty much none on it so it looks all plain and lonely.  I did pretty well with the page for the David Bowie Labyrinth movie screening.  I’m pretty happy with it.  My friend Derek said that layout was pretty cool.

Scrapbooking and Fruit Vandalization

I was scrolling through my Instagram feed the other day and one of the guys I follow, the Austin caveman, posted a picture of his meal (like he does) and it was zoodles (noodles made out of spiralized zucchini, just in case you didn’t know).  So, I got the idea that I should buy a bunch of zucchinis this weekend and hook up the spiralizer attachment I bought for my Kitchenaid mixer on Cyber Monday last month and make me some zoodles, then boil them so they’re soft.  Then I can mix some store bought marinara sauce with sautéed onions and mushrooms.  Then I’ll add a BUNCH of seasoned ground turkey and voila!  Spaghetti a la zoodle!  So I’ll eat that all next week for my lunches and I’m pretty excited about it.  Oh!  I also have an acorn squash that I need to use, so I’ll bake that and then mix it into the spaghetti sauce.  Can’t have too many veggies, right?

So, let’s just go over my weekday menu for next week:

• breakfast: fruit smoothie w/cashew milk, water & my super foods protein powder + 3 boiled eggs

• lunch spaghetti w/zoodles

• snack: sweet potatoes cooked in some way, shape or form

• dinner: Greek yogurt

• overtime snacks: skinny pop popcorn & sliced apples…and maybe a Sargento Balanced Breaks snack pack, if necessary

I kinda want to do some apples sautéed in coconut oil with cinnamon so maybe I’ll do that for the following week.  Might do a mix of apples and pears, in fact.  OR, I can bake them.  Hmm…might do that actually.

On Thursday, I worked overtime on the night shift…like I do.  Anyway, it was super cold and so while I didn’t want to skip my lunch break walk, I didn’t want to do it outside.  So, instead, I just walked back and forth in the hallway of the building where I was working.  I started it off with some of my PT exercises.  The band I have in my overtime bag is way more resistant than the one I use at the gym and/or at my PT sessions.  I got the floaty feeling in my hips after I got done and took the band off and was just doing my walking for the rest of my lunch break.

On Saturday, I had my very first “soft tissue” appointment at run lab.  Essentially, a deep tissue sports massage.  It went pretty well.  It HURT, but I know that if those kinds of massages don’t hurt a little (not like, ow you’re injuring me, just uncomfortable pain, you know?), then I know they’re not doing me any good.  After that, I went grocery shopping.  Then it was home to shower and then hanging out with Amanda!  We went to IKEA where I bought some storage trays for my Project Life cards.  YAY!  We then headed over to Joann’s Crafts where I bought some paper and other scrapbooking stuff.  Also, I ordered MORE of the 3x4 journaling cards from that lady on Etsy that I ordered all those cards from the other day.  I think I’m pretty well set for that size cards for quite some time!

After that, we went to a place called Hopdoddy’s.  It’s a burger place and it was pretty good.  We both got the chili queso fries (amazing!  highly recommend if you have a Hopdoddy’s near you).  I got the PRIMETIME burger and added a fried egg to it.  YUM!  I want to go back and try their Greek burger at some point.  Before we left I saw one of the bartenders (oh yea, we sat at the bar for faster service) giving a sample of something called Christmas Ale to another customer.  It was a dark beer with soft serve ice cream in it. Yes please!  So I asked for a sample as well and oh wow it was amazing!

In the evening, I went to Michael’s and, of course, bought MORE scrapbooking stuff.  Haha!  Then I mostly finished up my first 2 scrapbook pages in my new Project Life album.  So excited with how they turned out!

Saturday evening I also meal prepped for this week.  I used the spiralizer attachment for my Kitchenaid mixer for the first time and I LOVE it!  It’s so easy to use.  Almost fun, even!  I spiralized over 4 pounds of zucchini and then boiled it.  Then I made a super chunky, think meat sauce and prepped out 7 bowls of zoodles with meat sauce for my lunches.  Then I stuck a bunch of peeled and cubed sweet potatoes in the crockpot with butter and cinnamon.

In randomness from this week, I pulled out a super long (over an inch!!!) eyebrow hair from a friend’s face.  Speaking of random, one of my coworkers had a sad looking orange on his desk, so while he was away for his lunch break, I vandalized his orange.  Then when I went on break and came back, he had further vandalized it and put it on my desk.  HAHA!

Someone left a bag of Central Market brand “movie theater” popcorn in the breakroom at work on Friday.  I grabbed a handful and OMG so yummy!  Dangerous, is what it is.  I could totally eat the whole bag.

And, since I didn’t post this on Saturday like I’d planned to, let’s cover Sunday and Monday as well here while I’m at it….haha.

Okay, Sunday.  Sunday I was going to run 14 miles, a little later in the day as I knew it was going to be COLD…in the 20’s (I know that’s not really super cold, depending on where you live, but I’m not used to it at the moment so it’s pretty cold to me right now).  Anyway, I switched shifts with a girl a work, so I ended up at work on Sunday (and will have Tuesday off from my regular shift, but still have to go in for the overnight shift overtime I signed up for).  So then I changed it to just 10 miles.  But then I procrastinated because it was cold and not getting any warmer at all outside.  I finally headed out the door with 8 miles in mind.  By mile 3 it was painfully obvious that I had not layered properly on my arms and cut it short at just 4 miles.  Ugh.  I’m not sure I’m going to hit my goal of 120 miles for this month.  Oh well.  I’ll still try, tho.

On Monday, I got up and was PLANNING to run and go to the gym.  Buuuuuuut, I got sucked into scrapbooking stuff and ended up going to 2 different Michael’s in search of a specific valentine’s day stamp set, but was unable to find it.  Then I went to Hobby Lobby.  Needless to say, I didn’t have time to run and I had to cut my gym workout short.  BUT, I did get 10 minutes on the ladder, some PT exercises, the kettlebell sumo squats with front raise, the ab coaster and push press done.  YAY!

Physical Therapy & Birthday Cake

OMG, these pimples need to hurry up and heal.  Like seriously.  My face looks “horrible” (to me, anyway…probably no one else even notices) right now.  I’m trying desperately to take care of my skin, but, 1, these pimples just popped up out of nowhere (probably due to one day it was below freezing and then all of a sudden it was summer in December so that probably totally threw my skin’s chemistry completely out of whack), and 2, I think I’ve managed to aspirate (sorry, TMI, I’m sure) all of them but they’re taking forever to heal.  It’s just annoying and I’m impatient.  Ugh.  This is the worst breakout I’ve had in YEARS.  Usually I’ll only get one or 2 pimples at a time, but this time I got like 6.

Thursday morning I had another appointment with the RunLab.  By far, my favorite session with them.  I actually broke a sweat and was wishing that I had tracked it as a workout on my FitBit!  This was a very active session with fairly challenging exercises and I just really liked it a lot.  And my therapist and I chat the whole time so the session goes by super fast.  He had me doing a lot of different kinds of directional hopping around with a resistance band around my knees on one foot with my other leg lifted up to the side to create tension.  I told him I had plans to run afterward and he said that was actually a really good idea because the muscles in my hip area would be all fired up and tight from being worked out with all the hopping that I’d probably be running with better form.  I really paid attention to how my right leg was extending with my stride.  I could tell when I started to get tired because I could feel and see my right leg locking out straight and hitting the ground ahead of me instead of under me like it ideally should do.

So, after my RunLab appointment I went and ran 7 miles around the Ladybird Lake hike & bike trail.  I was originally thinking I’d hit the gym and get some upper body exercises done, but between my PT session being an actual workout and running that 7 miles at a 10:52 pace, I didn’t have the time nor the inclination to go to the gym.  Besides, it would have just been a bonus gym session anyway.  My gym days are pretty much Sunday, Monday and Saturday.  And then my run days are Sunday, Monday, Thursday and (maybe) Saturday.  With my crazy work schedule that I’ve made for myself, I really have to optimize my free time with working out.  Of course, I have to remember to leave time for friends and other hobbies as well.  Like my Project Life undertaking that I’ll be doing this year (and if I really like it, then next year and the year after and so on and so forth).  Speaking of, I’m beyond excited for Project Life!  The cards I ordered off of Etsy arrived on Tuesday and I love them!  I can’t wait to start using them!!!

So, last month, one of the guys at work said he was going to bring me a birthday cake since it was my birthday last month.  Well, he forgot.  I was perfectly fine with that as I thought he was joking in the first place anyway.  Well, I’ve been poking fun at him for the last 3 weeks, randomly asking “where’s my cake?”  Ha!  Joke’s on me.  Thursday he came into work with a cake for me!  So sweet of him to do that.  Now I need to find out when his birthday is so I can do something nice for him in return.  I was thinking of a custom cake, but I think I’ll make him a custom present instead that I think he’ll get a kick out of.  Can’t say anything more on the off chance he finds this blog and reads it.

Miles, Meals, Planners & Sweet Potatoes

Monday, I wanted to get up at 6:30, leave the house no later than 8 to drive to the gym, park, run 6 miles, then do my combat fitness practice workout.  HOWEVER, I didn’t drag my sorry carcass out of my bed until a smidge after 8.  Which is when I wanted to leave.  Great.  So it was like 9:30 before I left the house.  I got to the gym and parked.  I only had time for a 4 mile run.  Then I went inside the gym and did my workout of wall balls, step ups, kettlebell sumo squat to front raise, monster walks, sumo walks and push press (on the smith machine…better than nothing…at least there was an empty squat rack of some sort today and I got to do it this time).  I nixed the ladder machine because I just didn’t have that extra 10 minutes to spare.  But it was still a great workout and I’m glad that it was only shortened and that I didn’t have to forego it completely.

So, as a result of delaying myself going to the gym, I didn’t get home until about 25 minutes before I like to leave for work and I still had to shower, put my work uniform together, divvy up my meds into my daily pill holder thingie, fill my water bottles for work, pack my lunch, email a document to my work email.  UGH!  needless to say, I left for work about 25 minutes after I like to leave.  Granted, I was not late for work.  However, I didn’t get to do my standard pre-work walk around the parking garage.  Oh and I “gained” (most likely just water weight…I hope) 2 pounds over the weekend so then my uniform pants were all tight and uncomfortable and annoying.

So it was a good thing I recorded the New Year’s Eve shows because, well, I slept through them.  So, Sunday afternoon/evening while I was washing dishes, meal prepping and doing laundry, I watched them.  Better late than never, right?

Speaking of meal prepping, my meals for this week are as follows:

• breakfast: 3 boiled eggs & a fruit yogurt smoothie with cashew milk, water and my super foods powder blended together.

• lunch: 11 oz baked tilapia loins with salsa.

• snack: a coconut sweet potato crockpot “casserole" (see below for my adaptation of the recipe)

• dinner: Greek yogurt.

• overtime snacks: sliced apples & Skinny Pop popcorn.

So, for 2016, I signed up for a run 1000 miles in a year challenge.  Well, obviously, I hit that goal.  I ran 1268.84 miles in 2016!  BOOOOOOOOM!  Not only did I totally smash the 1000 mile challenge, but I also smashed my personal goal of running at least 1200 miles.

As of Sunday I am now officially using my new day planner!  I bought it at Marshall’s for $12 and I like it much better than my $30 (+ $$ for extra bits) planner I bought last summer that was good for 18 months.  I just couldn’t use it anymore.  The main 2 reasons were that it was just so big and the other main reason was the spine was these disks that the pages and cover pop onto and the cover kept popping off.  so I didn’t really feel as though it was all that secure or that it would stay together.  The new one has a very secure snap ring system…like a 3-ring binder.  And it has a snap closure to keep the cover closed.  It’s still good sized but it’s small enough to fit in my purse or my work bag without it being a pain to get it in or out.
so pretty

love this page where I can jot down my goals for the month

I do wish the day squares were a little bigger, but oh well

this section is quite handy

So, it’s amazing the difference that just .8 of a pound makes in how you feel and how your clothes fit.  That’s the difference in my weight between yesterday (Monday) and today (Tuesday).  Just .8 of a pound.  Wow.  While it’s just a tiny amount on the scale, it is a huge difference in the way my uniform pants are fitting today.  They’re not all tight and uncomfortable, making me cranky and irritable.  I strongly dislike being cranky and irritable.

Starting the New year

While grocery shopping at Costco on Saturday after I ran the Black Eyed Pea Run (not a race, just a bunch of people running somewhat together for different distances…3 to 24 miles, your choice), an older gentleman remarked that he liked my braids (I wear my hair in 2 braids when I run or workout currently).  I said “THANKS!  I try to keep it fun!”  He liked that.  And it made my day to get a compliment.  I mean, seriously, what girl doesn’t love a compliment about their appearance?  Even if it’s just a random one about your braids?  I really liked it because that’s not something that people remark on a lot.  Most people point out how thin/skinny/trim/fit/whatever I look now.  Which, don’t get me wrong, I LOVE when people point that out, but sometimes I want a random compliment, you know?

I ran the Cobweb Chaser 5K down in Helotes, TX just west of San Antonio on Sunday.  I won’t go super in depth here about the race itself (I want to save that for the recap!  And, according to my 2017 goals, I will get that posted within the next 1-2 weeks!  So stay tuned!  Of course, I also plan to start posting all the race recaps I’ve written but failed to post for the last 6 months…HA!).  I want to say that this was a great little race and totally worth the 1.5 hour drive each way.  There was a nice tech shirt at packet pickup, which I was able to do race morning…YAY!  Shortly after grabbing my packet I bumped into Paige and Ian from Feline Nomad and we became instant friends!  I look forward to a long friendship with them and following along with their nationwide adventures and shenanigans!  Go check them out!

Rewind a smidge back to Saturday, New Year’s Eve.  I didn’t get much sleep Friday night and was already tired because I had worked overtime Thursday night and slept about 3.5 hours of sleep Friday morning before going back to work (which, really, is quite a good, solid sleep for that time frame for me considering I only have about 4 hours in which I can actually lay down and attempt to sleep in that situation).  Anyway, so I was pretty tired on Saturday and then I ran that 11.8 super hilly miles for the Black Eyed Pea Run and was just completely spent.  After I got home from Costco, I showered and took my car to her oil change appointment.
I was on point with my yellow game on Saturday!

After that it was to Amanda's house for some Inkie Quill videos!  Since I’m going to be starting a Project Life scrapbook this year to chronicle my own adventures and shenanigans, I took my new album and my mass amount of pocket pages, and also some journaling cards I had bought, to show her.  While I was there, she was going through her PL journaling cards and gave me quite a few!  YAY!

After that, I stopped at Target to get the last few things I needed on my grocery list and then went home and crashed on the couch.  I meant to wake up around 10:30 and ring in the new year while drinking some apple pie moonshine a friend of mine had made and gave me as part of my Christmas present.  However, I woke up just as the countdown was happening on the TV (I fell asleep with the TV on…I tend to do that when I nap on the couch) after “napping” for almost 5 hours…oops.  BUT!  I did record it so I could watch it later, which I did Sunday evening.  Then I went back to bed around 2 am and slept for another 3 hours until it was time to get up so I could drive to Helotes for the 5K.

After the 5K, I drove into downtown San Antonio to buy a Come and Take It hat for a friend (and a second one for me in a color different than the pink one I bought last month).  Then I ended up cutting through the mall to get back to my car and found myself in Claire’s where I bought a “SQUAD” trucker hat and some leg warmers that will be fantastic for the 80’s 8K later this year!  Speaking of, I was going to register but I missed the super early bird pricing.  That ended on the 28th.  D’oh!  Now it’s $33 to register instead of just $19…that’s not expensive, but I’m just going to wait now.  The price doesn’t go up again until August 1st.  So I’ve got time.

Anyway, now the “SQUAD” hat is my favorite hat and I want to wear it all the time.  On my drive back home, I made my obligatory stop at the Buc-ee’s in New Braunfels.  I got me the biggest salad in the world and a coffee with ice in it (I like to drink my coffee without scalding my mouth when possible).

OH!  Ok, I’m all over the place here.  Right before the race, Soler’s Sports was giving away a bunch of race shirts from the Dam Tri, so I managed to find 2 in my size and grabbed those.  YAY!  They’re tri shirts, so they’re like sleeveless shirts with the quarter zip.  And they’re both really attractive!  Makes me want to do the race so I can “earn” one of the shirts!  We shall see.  I do eventually want to do a triathlon anyway.

I meant to post a post about my measurements and weight and body fat % with progress photos yesterday.  See, I want to do that on the 1st of every month.  And, while I did everything and I posted it all on my Instagram and the Facebook page for this blog, I completely spaced on creating a blog post for it.  Oops.  So I’ll just include that here and now.

And here’s the breakdown of my current stats:

• neck 13"
• chest 32"
• upper arm 12"
• forearm 11"
• waist 31.25"
• hips 36.6"
• thigh 24"
• calf 16"
• weight 162.7#
• body fat 28.5%
(for my weight and body fat I use a Fitbit Aria scale)

I bought my calendar for 2017 a couple months ago from Joann’s Crafts & Fabric store.  It’s a sewing themed calendar and I got it specifically for the art for the month of January!  I will be framing this page for sure!  It will be part of my running wall!
isn't this just awesome?

And, while we’re on the topic of calendars, for 2016 I had one of those motivational calendars.  You know the ones.  They have a nice picture and then a nice quote.  The last one for 2018 was a beautiful snowy scene with an old barn and a tree with leaves turned red.  The subject was “change” and the quote was by Sheryl Sandberg (think Facebook CEO).  “We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change.”  Wow.  What a note to end a year on.

And here’s to 2017 being better than 2016.  You may not have had a crappy 2016…I know I didn’t…but I’d still like 2017 to be better for me and for everyone!  So, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

2017 Goals

It’s that time again!  HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!  What did you do to celebrate and ring in the new year?  I ran.  Duh, like you didn’t see THAT coming!  Hahahaha!  But seriously, usually NYE and NYD fall on my work days and I don’t have the option of celebrating other than with my coworkers with a nice food spread and, of course, no champagne.  And also, usually no one wants to watch the ball drop on the TVs…bunch of party poopers, in my opinion.  So, THIS year, since both days fell on my days off, I lived it up as much as a runner can!

On New Year’s Eve, I met up with Austin’s Rogue Running for their annual Black Eyed Pea Run.  I opted for the 7am meet up for 14 miles or less.  My friend Rob also ran this.  I ended up running 11.8 miles.  It was fantastic (if you take out the part where I was complete exhausted and spent from non-stop hills…haha) and I’ve wanted to do this run for the last 2 years since I first found out about it.  But, like I said, I’m usually working so I haven’t been able to.

New Year’s Day, I made the drive down to San Antonio for the Cobweb Chaser 5K to ring in 2017!  This was my first time running this race (stay tuned for a recap for more details!).  I registered for it basically last minute…about 3 weeks before the race.  Since I started running over 4 years ago, I’ve wanted to do an organized New Year’s Day run, however it seems Austin doesn’t have one.  And if they do, I haven’t found it.  So, if you live in the Austin area and know of an organized New Year’s Day run, please, please, please let me know!  I’d love to find a half marathon to do, but a 5K or 10K is also just fine with me.  I just love to run and want to celebrate all the things with running!

Okay, now that I’ve talked about how I rang in the New Year, let me go over what my GOALS for 2017 are!  I prefer the term “goal” over “resolution.”  Goal sounds more hopeful and promising.  Resolution sounds like there’s no room for flexibility and like if I don’t meet my expectations for myself then I am a failure.  Resolutions intimidate me, goals welcome me.  It’s just perception, but it’s how I see it.  So, here we go!

• run at least 1300 miles
• PR everything!!!
• make a valiant attempt to qualify for the Boston Marathon (OMG!!!)
• re-establish the habit of strength training on some sort of regular basis
• lose weight and reach my ultimate goal of 145-ish and/or 23% body fat and then maintain it
• get a good handle on and be more consistent with my eating
• save money
• invest
• pay off debts
• create a YouTube channel and post vlogs to it on a regular basis
• post regularly on my blog
• post my race recaps in a timely manner (within 1-2 weeks of the race being recapped)
• send a letter to my non-computerized paternal grandma (she doesn’t have or know how to use a computer) every month
• continue to email my maternal grandma on a highly regular basis
• continue to journal daily
• set aside at least 1 hour to read a book and/or magazine (Runner’s World, of course) every week…I know it doesn’t sound like a lot, but it’s WAY more than I’m doing now…and it’s a good START!
• make it a priority to spend time with my friends every month
• keep a clean, tidy and organized home
• eat out less
• be frugal
• start a project life styled scrapbook and work on it regularly (ie-don’t get more than a month behind)
• MOVE…buy or rent a house

Now it’s your turn!  You can post a list of everything you’d love to do in 2017 or, at least, post the #1 thing you’d love, love, love to accomplish or do or experience in 2017!  AND GO!
