Mustache Dache 5K Race Report

This past Saturday, I ran the Austin installment of the Mustache Dache 5K.  I had decided when I signed up for it that I wanted to wear a mustache shirt.  I found a few shirts that I liked and finally decided on one of them.  The one I picked came in every color of the rainbow but I chose red.  It has a big smiley face on it that has a mustache.  I also decided that I would doodle a mustache on my face, which turned out nicely if I do say so myself.

The weather was great the weeks leading up to the race so I had no idea until the week of the race that a giant storm would be blowing in Friday afternoon and going through all day Saturday.  Pouring rain, thunder and lightning.  Joy.  I don’t mind running in the rain…in fact, I kind of like it.  It’s cathartic and relaxing.  I’ve talked on here previously about how when I was younger I used to go for long walks in the rain without an umbrella.

I didn’t want to wear my rain jacket over my super cute shirt that I had bought just to wear during this race.  So, I just decided that I would be getting wet and also that I would be running without music for this one.  I don’t think my Red Fox Wireless earphones are water resistant or waterproof, so I didn’t want to take a chance and kill them.

I stayed in my car until the last minute because of the rain and then made my way over to the start line.  I stood under one of those booth tent things with a bunch of other people.  Then it was time to line up at the start line so we all made our way over there.  Right as they were playing the national anthem, it stopped raining.  How crazy lucky is that?  Then they started the countdown clock and then we were off!  I have run this course before when I ran the Freedom 5000 earlier this year.  There was one difference with this time from that time…this one was actually a full 5K!  The Freedom 5000 was only 2.95 miles.  So, I was happy this was the full 5K.

Thankfully, the puddles that were on the course weren’t too big, so I didn’t get my shoes and socks too wet.  There was a lot of people wearing clothing with mustaches on it.  Mustache pajama pants, mustache shirts, mustache socks, mustache headbands and tiaras, mustache sunglasses, mustache necklaces, and, of course, adhesive mustaches and mustaches doodled on their faces (like me)!

I really enjoyed this race.  The only thing I wasn’t thrilled about is that the post-race area was also the end of the course so there were people running thru the post-race area and you had to watch out or you’d have a collision with someone finishing their race!  As soon as you crossed the finish line, you were handed your medal (which was a mustache with a bottle opener on it!).  There was free beer in the post-race area, muffins, bananas, coconut water protein shakes, and bean & cheese breakfast tacos.  I think there was more stuff but I am not usually hungry after running so I just grabbed my free beer, a protein shake and a taco and I left.

I had a really great time at this race.  A friend of mine was supposed to do it with me but she forgot…oops.  And then one of my Facebook page followers was thinking about doing it with me (she lives like an hour and a half drive away from where the race happened), but she wasn’t able to.  We’re going to try to meet up for a race next year!

Funny thing…and you know you just might be addicted to running races if you do this…is on my drive home from the Mustache Dache, I stopped and picked up my race packet for the Turkey Trot!
