Burpees & A Weekend of Running

I was challenged by a co-worker (Alex), who does Crossfit and therefore lots of burpees, to join him and do 500 burpees a week.  That breaks down to 71.5 burpees a day.  Back in December I did a squat-a-thon challenge that I really enjoyed.  I think I will really enjoy this burpee challenge as well.  I think that doing the burpees every day will only have a positive impact on my fitness level.  And I’m alllllllll about positive impacts on my fitness level.  All about it.  So, I think it’s safe to say that I have accepted this challenge.  Now I just need to make a visual reminder to set as my computer background so I remember to do the burpees every day.  So, since I’m doing this, I’m going to really DO IT.  I’m going to do a nice, even 75 burpees a day.  That adds up to 525 burpees a week.  Meet and exceed.  Meet and exceed.  That’s what I like to do with all of my goals.  The burpee challenge is set to run from May 15th to June 15th, but if I really like doing them every day, then there’s a good chance I will just continue to do them.  They’ll be a great way for me to warm up for my runs and for the gym.  It’ll get my blood pumping and make me ready for the day.

The last 3 days I have run.  Friday, I had 9 miles planned and ran 9.1.  Yesterday, I had 5 miles planned and ran 5.4.  Today, I ran 9.5 miles.  That adds up to 25 miles in 3 days.  That’s practically a marathon distance in just three days’ time.  Wow!  My legs are sooooo tired, but I love it.  My run times for the last 3 days weren't fast, in fact, they were slightly slower than my usual pace.  But, you know what?  I'm perfectly okay with that.  I may have slowed down a little, but I'm not giving up at all.  I'm pushing myself and making strides and I couldn't be more proud of myself.

Here’s my stats for the last 3 days (in the order of Friday, Saturday and today):

I'm not going to lie and say that I was looking forward to today's run.  Quite the opposite, in fact.  I was borderline dreading it.  I worked the night shift last night and didn't get home until around 7:30am.  I decided I would sleep and go running later in the day.  So that's what I did.  I decided it was best to time my run to finish right as it was getting dark after sunset.  Oh my goodness.  I could not have made a better decision as far as my run today went.  As I ran further and further, the temperature got cooler and cooler.  I never felt the need to stop and rest once during the 9.5 miles.  I only stopped once because I had to in order to eat a gel, but for the record, I did NOT want to stop.  I was feeling GOOD.  As you can see, i kept a sub 11 min/mi pace for the majority of the run.  only after mile 7 did i begin to slow down...and even then, in mile 9 I got a little speedy again for a mile.  I honestly thought I would pace around 11:30 for my overall average and my only goal for the run was to finish it successfully.  I met and exceeded my goal for today.  YAY!  And I PR'ed my 3-day running streak by logging 25 miles (my now old PR was 19.1).

I was going to ride my bike and go to the gym on top of running yesterday, but I didn't want to overdo it and make it so I couldn't finish my run today.  It kinda sucked too because it was such a beautiful afternoon and absolutely perfect for riding a bike.  So, I'm hoping to get out on the bike this afternoon for another 16.8 mile ride.  Next Saturday, I completely plan to shoot for riding and completing the 23.5-ish mile route I have mapped out and haven't done as of yet.

In other news, not only am I inspiring some of the people around me to take up running and/or get in the gym or do some other thing to work on being fitter and healthier people, but I just tailored a weekly strength training schedule for a friend.  She just signed up at a gym at my urging and telling her if she did sign up I would put together some workouts for her.  YAY!  She’s not currently running, but she is walking regularly.  Part of my urging her to go ahead and sign up at the gym was telling her that strength training is necessary for keeping yourself injury free when she does start running.  I’m so happy she’s taking these steps for herself.
