This
may come across as calloused or inhuman, but when the 9/11 tragedy occurred, I didn’t
have an emotional reaction. Why? Probably simply because I had no connection
to the victims other than we lived in the same country. However, yesterday’s events are a completely
different story. I’ve been a runner for
about 6 months now. I feel like I’m part
of something bigger than myself. A community
that cares about each other and waves and high fives each other as they pass on
the trails and roads and other paths across the country and even the
world. When I first heard about what
happened at Boston yesterday, I was at work.
It was a severe struggle for me to NOT tear up and cry. I was appalled and horrified by what I read
in the internet reports about the tragedy.
In
honor of the victims of yesterday’s attack, I’m dedicating my 6.2 mile run
today to the victims. It may not be
much, but it’s the only way I can think of to show my support of the victims
and their loved ones. My heart truly
goes out to them and I mourn their losses.
A
friend at work, when I asked her if she had heard about what happened, told me
that she hoped it didn’t come across as disrespectful, but that when she heard
about it, her first response was that she was glad I wasn’t there. While I hope one day to be lucky enough to
run the Boston, I hope that I can do so safely when I do.
Such a tragedy. :(
